SFMA movement assessment at Functional Rehab

Movement assessment

In addition to medical history and a neurological exam, we integrate the Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA) for all patients. The SFMA is a diagnostic tool that measures fundamental patterns of movement, such as squatting, bending, and overhead positions, in those with musculoskeletal pain. The screening identifies the places where you are not moving well and directs appropriate treatment toward that region.

Getting an accurate diagnosis is 90% of the treatment plan. SFMA is highly effective because it addresses the root of the problem: lack of mobility and/or dysfunctional motor patterns. By conducting a movement assessment using SFMA, Dr. Fidler can craft the best personal treatment plan based on individual patient needs.  He will look at your life holistically: where and how you work, your at-rest posture, your exercise routines, and everything in between

Who It’s For

Our Movement Assessment is designed for individuals who are experiencing ongoing muscle or joint pain, stiffness, or movement limitations. It is especially beneficial for patients dealing with neck pain, back discomfort, shoulder or hip tightness, and recurring injuries. Athletes who want to enhance performance or prevent injury can also benefit from this evaluation. It is equally helpful for desk workers experiencing posture-related strain, individuals recovering from injury, and anyone who feels restricted when bending, squatting, reaching, or lifting. If everyday movements feel uncomfortable, limited, or painful, this assessment can help uncover the underlying cause.

Treatment Approach

Our evaluation process integrates a detailed medical history, neurological examination, and the Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA). The SFMA is a comprehensive diagnostic tool that examines fundamental movement patterns such as squatting, bending, rotating, and reaching overhead. These tests allow us to determine where mobility is limited and where motor control may be dysfunctional.

Dr. Fidler takes a holistic view of your health and movement. He evaluates how and where you work, your posture at rest, your exercise routines, and the daily demands placed on your body. Since obtaining an accurate diagnosis is critical, the assessment is designed to identify the true source of dysfunction. Once the root cause is determined, a personalized treatment plan is created to address your specific needs and restore efficient, pain-free movement.

Expected Outcomes

After your Movement Assessment and customized care plan, you can expect a clearer understanding of why you are experiencing pain or movement limitations. As mobility improves and dysfunctional patterns are corrected, many patients notice reduced discomfort, increased flexibility, better posture, and more efficient movement. Over time, this approach not only relieves pain but also helps prevent future injuries. The goal is long-term correction and optimal movement rather than temporary relief.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Insurance coverage varies depending on your provider and individual plan. Our office can assist you in verifying your benefits before your appointment so you understand your coverage and any potential out-of-pocket costs.

  • The initial Movement Assessment typically lasts between 45 and 60 minutes. This allows adequate time for a comprehensive evaluation, detailed movement testing, and a discussion of findings and next steps.

  • Treatment frequency depends on your condition, goals, and the severity of movement dysfunction. Some patients benefit from weekly visits initially, while others may require less frequent appointments. Your personalized plan will outline a schedule designed to achieve the best results.

  • In most cases, imaging is not required prior to your visit. The SFMA provides detailed insight into movement quality and dysfunction. If imaging becomes necessary, we will guide you appropriately based on your evaluation.
