Treating shoulder pain at Functional Rehab in Brooklyn.

Shoulder pain

The emergence of CrossFit, or constantly varied functional movements done at a high intensity, in some cases has led to a greater incidence of injuries. Often this involves movements performed with poor form under a high load.

Dr. Jason Fidler has himself been CrossFitting for 8+ years and understands the demands these workouts place on shoulders in particular. He works with CrossFitters from across the NYC, as well as the adventure racing and triathlete communities, to prevent and treat injuries sustained through such demanding workouts.

Active Release Techniques

Shoulder injuries, like back pain, can result from a variety of issues and are often misdiagnosed. While there may be pain or a significant injury present in the shoulder, the mechanics of getting into a good position are often what lead to the shoulder suffering the injury. This will be scrutinized thoroughly in order to make sure the injury does not reoccur.

If there is an impingement, or pain with overhead movements, then one of the most effective treatments is Active Release Techniques® (ART), which Dr. Fidler is certified in and has practiced for several years. ART® is a manual technique that mobilizes the affected tissue to remove adhesions and scar tissue, which are the lead cause of shoulder impingement.

Treatment Approach

Dr. Jason Fidler has over eight years of personal CrossFit experience and understands the physical demands these workouts place on the shoulders. He works with CrossFit athletes throughout NYC, as well as members of the adventure racing and triathlon communities, to both prevent and treat shoulder injuries associated with high-intensity performance.

Each shoulder evaluation includes a thorough analysis of biomechanics, positioning, stabilization, and movement patterns. The mechanics required to achieve proper shoulder positioning are carefully examined to ensure the injury does not recur. Rather than focusing solely on the site of pain, we assess how the entire kinetic chain contributes to shoulder function.

Expected Outcomes

With an accurate diagnosis and targeted treatment plan, patients often experience improved range of motion, reduced pain, and enhanced shoulder stability. Many athletes notice better overhead mechanics and improved performance once dysfunctional patterns are corrected.

By addressing both tissue restrictions and biomechanical contributors, the goal is not only to relieve current symptoms but to prevent future injuries and support long-term shoulder health.
